Song of The Week: feedtime – “F#”

feedtime (lower case intentional) was a punk band from Sydney, Australia. They existed from 1979-1989 and in that time crafted an intense, pioneering hardcore punk sound. Their music is slow, heavy, and lo-fi; they served as a huge influence on important punk bands like The Melvins, Dinosaur Jr., and Mudhoney. This song is super slow and grimy, with sparse drumming and grinding, intense guitars. Sub Pop Records is re-releasing the band’s entire discography in a 4 CD box set. Song of The Week – Go Back To The Zoo “Beam Me Up”

Remember when Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out” blew up charts all over the world? Remember when The Strokes were the next big thing? Go Back To The Zoo certainly do! This SOTW features the song “Beam Me Up” from their new record Benny Blisto. This album was originally released in 2010 by the Dutch indie rock band, but is just now making its way over to the USA. I sort of wish this had happened years ago, though: Benny Blisto is an excellent record, full of energetic post-punk indie tunes that make you want to go to a Bloc Party show. Check this out- they’ve got that quintessential indie swagger that makes them ear-catching and super-entertaining! If you like the song, you can find more information about the band on their Myspace.

Setlist 3/30/2012

Back to normal, finally! I’m all caught up on setlists and am blogging live, once again! I had a lazy show tonight. I was busy running all over the place all today and didn’t have time to plan my setlist out in advance. Instead, I opted to do a playlist show and survey some of the great new music here at The Core. I did the show in three main sections. The first was an hour long indie rock block, which included some more experimental music at times; the second half hour was an electronic/hip-hop block; the last half hour was a metal set. I decided to break the setlist up by sections, for informative purposes. Check out what I played below!

Song Of The Week: Say Anything – “Sheep”

This is the sixth track from Say Anything’s brand new album Anarchy, My Dear (released March 13th in Equal Vision Records). I haven’t had a chance to listen to the whole album closely yet, but this track really stands out from the ones I’ve heard. It uses a subtle-yet-intense rhythm section to accentuate Max Bemis’s lyrics. His words are quintessential Bemis: “Kill that DJ, clear the dance floor.” It closes down with an intense, upbeat dance-punk groove that finishes on a great high note. If you like this song, you can find out more information about Say Anything on their Facebook page.

Song Of The Week: The Mars Volta – “The Malkin Jewel”

Words can’t even describe how excellent The Mars Volta’s new single is. As a big Volta fan over the course of their career,  I’ve watched their style evolve from the cinematic, emotional De-Loused In The Comatorium to the eccentric and avant-garde Amputecture. On the new singls, “The Malkin Jewel,” the band continues their musical evolution that began with Octahedron. The track is full of skronky rhythms and dissonant melodies. Vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala  sounds much more focused this time around – his lyrics are at the very least vaguely decipherable, which is more than can be said for the wide variety of his work with The Mars Volta. The new album, entitled Nocturniquet, comes out on 3/27/2012.
