If you’re reading this, then congratulations, I guess. I’m Ryan and I do a radio show, conveniently titled “Art For Art’s Sake.” On this show, my mission is to make an interesting, eclectic mix of music. I sincerely hope that any person listening could, in any given set, hear at least one song that they like. I like all kinds of music. My show focuses on experimental metal, avant-garde music, folk, indie rock, progressive hardcore, and electronic music, in whatever form it night come in. I also like to play a lot of local artists, more broadly, musicians from New Jersey. The station is located in Piscataway, New Jersey, just a mile or two away from New Brunswick, which has a diverse, thriving music community. It seems to me that I would be wasting my time if I didn’t play some of the excellent artists who got their start in the area – Thursday, The Gaslight Anthem, and Streetlight Manifesto are a few of the big ones that come to mind.

My show finds its home on 90.3 The Core. It’s an independent college radio station, located on the campus of Rutgers University. It has existed in various forms, under various names and call signs, since the early 1970s. Our transmitter, located on the Livingston Campus of Rutgers University, reaches over a million people in the central Jersey area. We have an excellent variety of music; our DJs bring in tons of their own favorite songs, which are augmented by the latest and greatest in independent music. We’re partnered with Piscataway High School; they do a few hours of programming a day as part of a course offered by the school, but Rutgers DJs provide the majority of the programming. I’m on the music staff of the station, currently serving as Loud Rock Director. That means that I talk to promoters, bring new music to the station, and review it to see what kinds of things the DJs will play on the shows. As Loud Rock Director, I work specifically with metal, punk rock, and hardcore, though my interests are much, much more broad than just heavy stuff.

If you tune into my show, you’re likely to hear some strange contrasts. I will play a grindcore song, sandwiched between two folk songs. I will go from post-metal to math rock, free jazz to pop punk, New Brunswick noise rock to Israeli dubstep. I will play songs released in the past week along with songs released 50 years ago. If you sit down and listen to the entire two-hour show, you will almost definitely not like every song. You may think I’m a crazy person for the way I hop between genres. But you will also get a mix of music you will literally hear nowhere else. Love what I do or hate what I do – no matter what, it will never be boring. If this seems like something you’d like to experience for yourself, be sure to tune in on Tuesday nights (going into Wednesday) at midnight until 2AM. If you’re in Middlesex County, New Jersey, you can tune in at 90.3 FM. If you’re from somewhere else or simply don’t have a radio, you can stream my show (as well as all other shows on the station) live online at thecore.fm. You can call the studio to make a request, too. The number is 732-445-9300.

This blog will run in correlation with the show. I will post every song from my setlist each week. In addition to that, I will occasionally post some music/movie/whatever reviews, random thoughts, and setlists from other shows that I do live on 90.3 The Core. I’m currently running two shows; the other is called Midnight Metal Massacre, which runs on Thursday nights (into Friday morning; see a trend here?) at midnight to 2AM. I also frequently cover shows for other Core DJs who, for whatever reason, can’t make it to the studio. At the risk of overstaying my welcome, I’m going to stop typing now. Hope you come along on this wild ride with me.
