Song Of The Week: The Mars Volta – “The Malkin Jewel”

Words can’t even describe how excellent The Mars Volta’s new single is. As a big Volta fan over the course of their career,  I’ve watched their style evolve from the cinematic, emotional De-Loused In The Comatorium to the eccentric and avant-garde Amputecture. On the new singls, “The Malkin Jewel,” the band continues their musical evolution that began with Octahedron. The track is full of skronky rhythms and dissonant melodies. Vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala  sounds much more focused this time around – his lyrics are at the very least vaguely decipherable, which is more than can be said for the wide variety of his work with The Mars Volta. The new album, entitled Nocturniquet, comes out on 3/27/2012.
