Pop punk, when done right, is a glorious thing. It’s so easy to come off as whiny and cheesy – see bands like Set Your Goals or Four Year Strong for ample example. Yet when a band writes titanic riffs, emotional yet meaningful lyrics, and plays it all with passion and intensity, they can make the style something special and unique. They’s exactly what Bayside do on their 2007 record The Walking Wounded. I’m mostly drawn to this band by their massive, catchy riffs and their keen sense of melody. This song, “They’re Not Horses, They’re Unicorns,” is an excellent example of what makes the band so awesome. The lead riff is a slow, lumbering, intense monstrosity that nonetheless is completely unforgettable and should be heard by anyone who’s into powerful, edgy rock music.
